The Monkey Review

This is not your mother’s killer monkey movie! I enjoyed this film. It was genuinely scary. Twin boys give money to a monkey possessed by their absent father and unleash his power to kill. Based on the short story “Monkey Shyness” by Stephen King.

The characters of the mother and the two young twins have been played very thoughtfully and well. The character of Lois (the mother) suffered some turmoil and was portrayed as strange.

It was a little weird but I felt sad because you know kids aren’t going to stop after seeing the first death. The action in the film progresses rapidly and the audience begins to be able to predict the king’s next death.

The Monkey is omnipotent, his only weakness is that he has to turn to someone. The murder scenes were too bloody for me but some were so outrageous and bloody that they were fascinating.

One of the most effective techniques employed was the voice-over and evoked the classic original “Twilight Zone” narration. It was performed by Theo James, who also expertly portrayed the adult versions of the twins: Hal and Bill.

Other standout memorable characters were the Good Twins, Hal’s allies, and his three sons. The son was the only normal character in the entire movie, making it a relief to see him and his reaction to everything. He skillfully entered the hotel through the dog door and successfully avoided booby traps.

The direction of the film was very interesting, with each son impeccably transforming into the other son; Meaning a bloody murder begins with barely any blood being drawn and the action is over but the audience feels the tension building up to the next murder.

Overall well made, but had a more modern touch, about five times the violence than classic/popular horror like “Scream”, “Child’s Play” or the original “Halloween”.
