Sumala Review
The film “Sumala” follows a fairly traditional storyline, but is still able to keep the audience engaged throughout. Unfortunately, the story lacks major surprises and plot twists, so it feels a bit flat.
Perhaps because the film is trying to explain a myth that remains widespread in many parts of Indonesia, the film works in a flashback model. The beginning, the conflict, the climax and the end are like that.
In terms of acting, the cast delivered solid performances overall. Darius and Luna, as the leads, do an excellent job of bringing their characters to life well. However, he doesn’t seem to have fully immersed himself in the role, so the emotions expressed are not at their peak.
Generally following the standard of Indonesian horror films, the pace of the film is relatively fast. However, for audiences seeking slow-paced horror, this packaging may seem unsatisfactory.
The cinematography of this film is fairly good, although the color grading used still follows the current trend in Indonesian horror films, which I don’t like. Those who do not like it. However, the film makes a solid impact due to the totality of the assets used, Which has a deep impact on the film.
One somewhat frustrating aspect is the inconsistent use of language. The film lacks Javanese and Indonesian, which is less effective. If the goal is to ensure the film is accessible to all audiences in Indonesia, throughput should be used in the film.
Overall, the film presents a much-awaited ending. Everyone is laughing as Sumala takes revenge. Nonetheless, Nothing, it’s a satisfying ending to the story.
