Chhaava Review
Laxman Utkar’s Chhaava is not a traditional biopic but rather based on the events of the Battle of Budhanpur and its significance on the Maratha-Mughal War.
The film definitely faced script problems in the first half. It’s the second half where the film picks up pace. The pre-climax fight and violent but emotional climax unfolds, especially a special scene starring Vicky and Vineet, and Raja here and there.
However, A. R. Rahman’s music and score turned out to be the weakest part of the film. It worked at certain moments but it did not have the energy required to match the Maratha spirit in the battle sequence and at many places, the score was so bad that it distracted attention from the screen.
Apart from Vicky Kaushal’s fight sequence, the action is raw and well-executed, but the editing makes it awkward on screen. The camerawork, color grading and custom design deserve special mention. Work is excellent over wide areas in CGI work.
It’s really the performances that truly define the film what it is. Vicky Kaushal is playing the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
The climax sequence is especially played very well by Vicky. Akshaye Khanna’s talking less and shines as Aurangzeb. Rashmika delivered a good performance but her quote was wrong. Ashutosh Rana Providence Good support. While Divya Dutta and Diana Penty have limited roles.
But the one who stands out among the supporting cast is Vineet Kumar, whose vital dialogue delivery stays with you throughout. The rest of the supporting actors also do a great job.
Overall, Chhaaava is nothing extraordinary and has its fair share of floss, but it’s the performances that make it worth watching. The last 30-40 minutes will definitely make you emotional and leave the theater in complete silence.
