Heretic Review
The Heretic movie I was highly excited about the moment when I saw the trailer. It was released in India and watched Heretic in pvr inox theater—And although it was released in India a month after its US theatrical release . In hindsight, it turns out that nothing special was ever released, it was just a disappointment.
The story begins with two young missionaries visiting a house to spread God’s message, but fall into the clutches of a sinister man who lives there. He traps them in a cruel game of faith, forcing them to rely on their own beliefs in order to survive.
The film starts on a promising note, filling you with expectations of something interesting. However, it falls down as the story progresses.
Just when things were about to pick up, the narrative turned into an endless conversation spree that forced me to fall asleep.
The idea of exploring religious belief and unbelief may sound great on paper, on screen, it falls flat, leaving you either yawning or tempted to abandon the film altogether.
Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East give outstanding performances. His subtle expressions are a masterclass in how actors are able to command attention and be seen.
Through subtle acting, they brilliantly convey fear and pain. Hugh Grant, too, does a commendable job, portraying a menacing character without resorting to gimmicks.
While the overall thrill and horror elements are tremendous, certain moments stand out even more. The scenes set in the basement are hair-raising.
Executed with superb craftsmanship, be prepared for some hard work. Although there are no such things as ghosts, some characters come across in disturbing ways that can make your heart skip a beat, which is beautifully done with make-up and prosthetics.
For its genre, the movie disappoints. However, if you do watch it,look out for the strong performances and a few compelling scenes in the latter half of the film.
