Memoir of a Snail Review

This year, I came across an animated short film called “Harvey Krumpet”. If you’ve never seen it, it’s a tragic comedy about the life of a Polish immigrant.

The story lacks a strong plot, meaning the characters have no clear goals or objectives, and it is almost all exposition. The film is basically just Geoffrey Rush narrating the main character’s life and quirks, with no one onscreen ever talking. I loved every aspect of the story – from the almost storybook lines, to the dull, downright ugly appearance of the characters, to the poignant combination of tragic and comedic elements—fascinating, and leaving one curious about the director’s other works.

Along with several other short films, he’s also directed two features, including this latest effort, “Memoirs of a Snail.” And I’m especially glad I watched “Harvie Krumpet” first, because it really helped me process this movie better.

Like “Harvey Krumpet”, “Memoirs of a Snail” is a mostly plotless tragic comedy about strange people wandering through life. This does not mean that nothing happens. They have no clear goals or missions.

In this case, the film follows two siblings’ journeys as they grow up, lose their father, are torn apart by the parenting system, experience various losses, and try to find their life purpose and meaning. And like “Harvie Krumpet,” there’s a surprising amount of humor in the proceedings.

Even when things turn tragic, there’s usually a joke hidden in there. I found the film entertaining and my audience loved it. And while I don’t know if everyone should watch this movie or not.

There are some disgusting moments, like a fight where a child’s tooth gets knocked out, and some unnecessary coda involving a judge and a rollercoaster. I still believe you all should check it out once.

Since there is no clear plot, the film takes its time to fully explore the characters, and give them rich stories and quirks. And unlike “Harvey Krumpet”, this time there is dialogue, and the animation is more fluid.

Watching this movie really made me think about my approach to storytelling. You don’t need a high concept and a laborious plot to capture an audience’s attention.

The people will gladly spend 90 minutes and just watch people live, as long as those people are interesting and relatable. And there certainly are characters here. So if you get a chance, definitely watch this film.
